‘The Giant And Delicious Papad of The World’
Whenever we think of a full fledged meal, it is an imperative necissity that the side-dish items would necessarily contain the item of Papad locally called as Appalam. This item of side-dish is also prepared as an additional side-dish item in the day to day meals of the Tamil, because it is being liked by the elders and children alike. To put it in a nutshell, the Tamil people are fond of preparing and eating Appalam very often as it is a likeable and delicious side-dish. In functions like marriages, naming ceremony, house warming ceremony etc., the guests are honoured and pleased with a full meal and invariably with a payasam and appalam, and then only the lunch gets fulfilled.
There are umpteem numbers of local and foreign snacks sold in the market to attract the children. But the only one item of snacks that is harmless and delicious to the children is Papad alone. The Tamil living in various places of the world do very much like the Papads of India imported from Tamilnadu in particular. In most of the festivals of Tamilnadu, the Delhi Appalam is prepared on the spot and served to the elders and children. The Delhi Appalam is said to be the biggest ever known in the world of Papads. It is the biggest round of papad compared to the other existing normal papads known by everybody. This history of Delhi Appalam is being broken successfully by Mr.Manikandan, Managing Director, Sastha Appalam, Chinna Annupanadi of Madurai.
Mr.Manikandan is running the factory of Sri Sastha Appalam in Chinna Annupanadi of Madurai for the last more than twenty years most successfully. Very recently an exhibition on Food Technology was conducted in Tamukkam Grounds of Madurai. Mr. Manikandan thought that there should be some special upgradation and a special programme under Small Scale Industries and in particular with his Sastha Papads. Mr.G. Thirumurugan, Secretary, Papad Manufacturers Society also pleaded with Mr.Manikandan to do some special programme in respect of Sastha Appalam.
With the introduction of large scale involvement of machinery in the Papad making process, many workers are left without the assurance of employment. In order to curtail this and to provide more of employment to the Papad making workers, we ventured into a special trial of making a 20 inch papad bigger than that of Delhi Papad and we succeded in that effort also said Mr.Manikandan. But at the same time we could bring out only two numbers of 20 inch special papads. And even to this exclusive effort, all the workers putforth their utmost interest and involvement. In the exhibition there was a wide range of welcome and response to this special 20 inch papad of Sastha.
Since our latest preperation of 20 inch mega size papad is a over shooting the size of Delhi Appalam, it has been proved that this has been the largest ever appalam prepared in Tamilnadu and we have submitted the information to the Achievement Committee for the approval of our exclusive achievement. In addition to this mega size 20 inch papad, we are preparing a special two inch coin papad with the ingredients of Basil, Cumin and Asofetida which would add up to the digestive power of adults and children alike. Papads are treated as snacks and side-dish by both elders and children all through the year and the response to this item of food is ever-increasing. As such, our papads are being exported to all countries
